What to Do on a New Moon

A new moon is for planting, not clearing

The new moon is about new intentions. New starts, new beginnings. You are seeding something, putting it in the ground and waiting for it to grow.

That is the whole character of it, and if you use it for releasing instead you have got the wrong half of the cycle.

Set the intention first 🌱

Write down what you are actually planting. Not a wish list, one or two things you genuinely mean.

Seeds need to be specific. Something vague put in the ground grows into something vague.

Cinnamon through the front door 🧡

Ground cinnamon in your right hand, blown through the doorway into your home. This is my favourite new moon moment for it, because you are inviting something in at exactly the point in the month when things begin.

Clean out your wallet 👛

Empty it properly and build it back. The full ladder of bills if you can manage it, change in the zipper section, your #28 note that never gets spent, and a little cinnamon sack tucked in with the money.

A wallet is where a lot of your intentions live whether you meant them to or not.

Move things ✨

Seven to nine things around the house, as you would any day, but pay attention on a new moon. Fill a bare corner. Move a plant into better light.

You are making room for whatever you just planted.

Then wait 🌑

That is the part nobody likes. The new moon is a beginning, not a result. You have put it in the ground. Let it be in the ground.

How to write an intention that holds 📝

Name the thing, not the feeling. Not I want to feel secure, but I want three new clients by the solstice.

One or two of them, not a list. And write them somewhere you will actually see again, because the full moon is when you come back and look at what grew.

The order I do it in 🌑

Intention first, while the house is still as it was. Then the wallet, emptied and rebuilt. Then cinnamon through the front door. Then the moving of things, last, so you are making room for something already named.

Twenty minutes, once a month.

Does it have to be the exact night?

The night of, or the day either side. The energy does not switch off at midnight.

What if I want to release something instead?

Wait two weeks. That is what the full moon is for, and using the wrong half of the cycle is the single most common mistake I see.

Can I set money intentions and other intentions together?

Yes, but keep them separate on the page. Money is specific and it does better when it is not bundled in with everything else you want.

How do I know if it worked?

You look at the full moon, not the next morning. That is the whole rhythm of it.

What does the sign matter?

It colours what the month is good for. A new moon in an earth sign favours practical, buildable intentions; a fire sign favours bold ones. More on that in what the moon actually means.

Then the harder part 🤍

Leave it alone. The new moon is a beginning, not a result, and the urge to keep digging the seed up to check on it is the thing that kills more intentions than anything else.
