What to actually do on a full moon
The full moon is release. Whatever it was has already come to fruition, already bloomed, already shown you what you needed to see.
Your job now is to be finished with it.
Take the old things outside 🚪
The old water. The candles that have burned down. Anything you have been holding on to that has done its work.
Throw it outside the house with your right hand, and say it out loud as you go.
For all my wishes to come true, I throw it out into the universe. I give it to the ground. I give it to the earth. I give it to the people. I give it to God.
Never down the drain 🚫
Not the toilet, not the sink. Everything goes outside the house, every time. I am firm about this one.
Make your moon water 🌕
A mason jar, filled with water, held in your hands while you say what it is for. Then left outside overnight under the moon.
Drink it afterwards with your intentions set, or stand it on top of wishes written on small pieces of paper.
Clear the house while you are at it 🧹
Full moon is a good night to deal with the things that have quietly gone stale. Dead flowers. Plants that need attention. The drawer you have been avoiding.
Not a deep clean. A clear out. Different job.
And let something actually go 🤍
The rituals are the easy part. The full moon asks you to genuinely finish with something, and usually you already know what it is.
What counts as old water 💧
Any water that has been sitting with a job. Moon water from last month. A glass left on an altar. Water from a bowl you put out to absorb something.
Flower water from a vase counts too, and so does the last of a simmer pot. If it has been holding something, it goes out.
And the candles 🕯️
Anything burned down. Stubs, wax pools, the jar with an inch left that you have been meaning to deal with.
They did their work. Keeping a spent candle is keeping a finished thing, which is the exact opposite of what a full moon is for.
Why not down the drain?
Because a drain takes it back into the house's plumbing, which is still the house. Outside means outside, given to the ground.
What if I live in an apartment with no outdoor space?
A balcony plant pot. A communal garden. The street tree outside your building. It needs earth, not a sink.
Does the full moon have to be visible?
No. Cloud makes no difference, and neither does rain. The moon is doing what it is doing regardless of whether you can see it.
Can I make moon water on a night that is not full?
You can put a jar out any night. It is full moon water on a full moon, and something else otherwise.
Is it safe to drink?
Clean jar, clean water, covered, one night, brought in the next morning. Use common sense and do not drink anything that has sat out for a week.

If you want the reasoning behind why release is the theme at all, read what the full moon means spiritually. If you want the specific throwing ritual on its own, it is in the release ritual.
And two weeks later, the other half: what to do on a new moon.
