How to Hold On to Money

Bringing it in is not the problem

Most people I sit with can make money. They have done it before, sometimes a lot of it. What they cannot do is let it stay.

Holding money is a separate skill from earning it, and almost nobody was taught the second one.

Holding a little money can become a learned skill. Learned. That word matters, because it means you do not have to already be good at it.

Keep something still 🪨

Some money has to stop moving. Not all of it, not most of it, just some.

Twenty in a drawer. A note in your wallet marked #28 that never gets broken. An amount that is genuinely safe, sitting somewhere, going nowhere.

That is not hoarding. Hoarding is fear with a tidier name. This is practice.

Interrupt the reflex ✋

Money usually leaves without a decision being made. One breath before you move it, and four questions. What is due? What must be protected? What do I genuinely want? What amount, if any, can stay?

That last question is the one that changes things, and it is the one nobody asks.

Watch who it is going to 👥

A lot of money does not get spent, it gets given, lent and absorbed. Look at who you keep tying your money to and whether that exchange is building anything.

Generosity needs boundaries or it just becomes a leak with a kind face on it.

Do not do it from panic 🌬️

If money is genuinely short this week, cover your needs first. Food, shelter, medicine, safety.

When you are panicked every choice feels like the last one you will ever get to make, and nothing good gets decided there. Come back to the practice when you can breathe.

The three leaks 🕳️

The reflex. Money moves before a decision gets made. Fixed by one breath and four questions.

The tether. Money given, lent and absorbed into exchanges that are not building anything. Fixed by looking at who you are tied to.

The story. A belief that it is leaving anyway, so why bother. Fixed with evidence, which is the drawer.

Most people have all three and only ever try to fix the first one.

Is this just saving?

No. Saving is a target and a balance. This is a relationship, and it works at twenty dollars, where no savings plan does anything at all.

What if I earn well and still cannot keep it?

Extremely common, and income will not solve it. Holding is a separate skill from earning and nobody taught you the second one.

How much should I be holding?

Whatever is genuinely safe, and no more. Safe means it does not take from food, bills, medicine or anything you actually need.

What if I have debt?

Cover what is due, then hold something small anyway. Waiting until you are debt free to start is waiting years to learn a skill you need now.

How do I know it is working?

When money arriving stops producing urgency. Not when the number changes.

The worldview underneath it is scarcity mindset, and the structured version is the thirty day practice.
