Money Tethering: Who Are You Tying Your Money To?

Every dollar you move ties you to somebody

This is the part of money work almost nobody talks about, and it is the part I watch cost people the most.

Every time money moves between you and another person, a relationship comes with it. You are tying your time, your effort and your money to an exchange. Not just the amount. The whole thing.

So before you lend, invest, hire, work for somebody or take on a client, ask one question. Who am I tying my money to?

Quantifying your money 🔍

Quantifying means deliberately looking at where your money is going, who it is connected to, and what the exchange is actually building.

Pick a day when you feel steady enough to sit with your numbers and your decisions. Not from fear, and not from lack. When you are panicked, every choice feels like the last one you will ever get to make. Cover your needs first. Then come back to the decision with a clear head.

The one to ten check 📊

Think about your own money habits on a scale of one to ten. This is a reflection tool. It is not a label for anybody's worth, including yours.

If you feel like a five right now, look for the people who bring the steadiness of a six, a seven, a ten. The ones who honour agreements, communicate clearly and handle money with care. Get near them. Let the exchange help you grow.

And if you have worked hard to become a nine, pay attention before you lend again and again to somebody whose habits sit at a four. Ask yourself honestly whether you are helping them build something, or absorbing a pattern they are not willing to change.

Generosity needs boundaries. Somebody having less money than you does not make them a lower energy person. Watch actions and accountability, not bank balances.

The tether goes both ways 🔗

Look at who pays you, who works beside you, and who you pay. If you run a business, the people you hire shape the room too.

When somebody is consistently ungrateful, refuses responsibility or brings down the morale of everybody around them, that costs time, focus, trust and money. Address the behaviour fairly and directly. Do not confuse somebody having a hard season with somebody repeatedly breaking the agreement.

This is what I mean when I say money can leak right out of a building. Notice the practical leaks alongside the energetic ones: missed deadlines, unclear roles, unpaid invoices, poor communication, and resentment nobody has addressed.

Your spiritual discernment and your business boundaries belong in the same conversation.

Choose your quantification day 📆

Pick a day this week when you can look at your money without rushing. Write down one exchange you are weighing right now, and answer four things.

What is the amount, and what are the terms? What has this person shown you through their actions? What boundary or written agreement would protect you both? And if you are deciding from fear, what would it take to wait until you are not?

No particular day guarantees a return. The point is that you made the decision awake.

Three questions to sit with ✍️

Who helps me feel more capable and responsible with money, and why?

Where am I giving, lending, earning or paying out of fear or obligation?

What one boundary would make this exchange healthier for everyone involved?

Does this mean I should stop helping people?

No. It means help on purpose, with clear terms, rather than by default. Generosity needs boundaries or it stops being generosity and becomes a leak.

What if it is family?

Family is where this is hardest and where it matters most. The questions do not change: what are the terms, what have they shown you, what would protect you both.

Is asking for a written agreement cold?

It is the opposite. A written agreement protects the relationship, because most fallings out come from two people remembering different things.

What if I am the four in somebody else's life?

Then find the sixes and sevens and learn from them, which is the whole point of the scale. It is a snapshot of habits, not a verdict on you.

How does this apply if I employ people?

Directly. Look at who you pay and what the exchange creates. Somebody consistently unaccountable costs more than their wage.

Pair it with 🔗

Do this work on a quantification day rather than in the moment, and use the four questions for anything smaller that comes up in between.

If saying no is the hard part, the belief underneath is usually in childhood money wounds.
