The hundred dollar bill is a symbol of keeping
A lot of people have heard you should keep a hundred dollar bill in your wallet. Fewer people have heard why, so they either do it wrong or they do it for a week and give up.
It is not there to attract more money. It is there so you get used to the feeling of having money that you are not about to spend.
What is a safe amount for me to keep visible? That is the question underneath the whole thing.
Why visible matters 👁️
Money in an account is abstract. You can be frightened of a number on a screen without ever really looking at it.
A note you can see and touch is different. You open your wallet, it is there, and nothing bad happens. You open it the next day, it is still there, and nothing bad happens then either. Over and over, until the part of you that panics quietens down.
That is the work. You are proving to yourself, with evidence, that money can be in your life and stay.
The word safe is doing a lot of work here ⚖️
Safe means it does not take from your food, your bills, your medicine or anything else you actually need. If a hundred is not safe right now, it is not the number for you today, and that is not a failure.
Start where you genuinely are. Twenty. Ten. One. A written note that stands in for it. The amount was never the point. The practice is the point.
And if you end up needing it, use it. Use it kindly and without shame. That is money doing its job, and you can begin again.
What it is not 🚫
This is not a promise that a hundred in your wallet brings a thousand to your door. I am not going to tell you that.
What I will tell you is that people who can hold a little without flinching tend to end up holding more, and people who cannot tend to stay exactly where they are no matter how much comes in.
Where to keep it 👛
In your wallet, in its own compartment, separate from your spending money. Not in a drawer at home, because the whole point is that you see it in the moments when you are deciding.
That is what makes it different from the in the drawer, which is about holding. This one is about seeing.
When to swap it 🔄
When it has been in there a long time and gone quiet. A year is about right.
A bill that has sat that long has connected everything it can, and it wants replacing with a fresh one while the old one goes out and circulates. That whole idea is in exchanging old money for new.
Does it have to be a hundred?
No, and for a lot of people it should not be. Safe is the operative word. Fifty, twenty, ten, one. Start where you genuinely are.
What if I am tempted to spend it?
That temptation is the practice working. It is showing you the reflex. Notice it, name it, and leave the note where it is.
What if I have to spend it?
Spend it, kindly and without shame, and start again. Using it is not failing. Punishing yourself for using it is the only way to break this.
Should I write anything on it?
That is the #28 practice, and yes, it works beautifully on this note.
Is this just hoarding?
No. Hoarding is fear. This is one note, held deliberately, while the rest of your money moves normally. The difference is in circulating money.
Pair it with 🔗
Visible money and still money are two halves of the same skill. Run this alongside the drawer and you are learning both at once.
Walk the thirty days with me 📕
The Money Trust Journal takes this practice day by day for thirty days: the opening inventory, four stages, and a place to track what you are holding.
