Exchanging Old Money for New Money

Exchange your old money for new money

If a hundred dollar bill has been sitting in your wallet for a year, it is done. It has connected all the money it could possibly connect.

Think of it like wi-fi that has been used all the way up. Or an air freshener that has gone dry. It is not bad, it is finished.

Swap it out 🔄

Take the old bill out and put a fresh one in its place. Same amount, new note. The practice continues, the paper gets replaced.

Anything that sits too long goes stagnant, and that includes the money you are deliberately keeping still.

Now go and spend the old one 🛍️

Do not tuck it in a drawer. Circulate it. Take it out into the world.

Starbucks. Dunkin. Home Goods. Wherever brings you joy, and I mean that literally, because the whole point is that this money leaves your hands happily.

Always spend that money with joy.

One exception 💡

Try not to pay a bill with it. Not an ordinary, grinding, resented bill anyway.

A good bill is different. If it is a debt you are clearing, something that is finally getting paid off, that is a joyful thing and that money is welcome there.

Why it matters 🤍

Because keeping and circulating are both part of the same practice, and a lot of people only ever learn one of them.

You hold some still so you get used to money staying. You move some on so you get used to money flowing. Exchanging the old note for a new one is the moment those two meet.

How to tell it has gone quiet 🔇

Usually you already know. You look at it and feel nothing, where once you felt something about keeping it there.

A year is the rough marker. Less if it has been through a lot, longer if it has genuinely sat untouched and still feels alive to you. Trust the noticing over the calendar.

What joyful spending actually means 🛍️

Somewhere you are pleased to be. Coffee. A plant. A book. Something for somebody else. It does not have to be indulgent, it has to be willing.

The test is simple: did the money leave your hand happily? If it left resentfully, that was not the right place for it.

What counts as a good bill?

A debt getting cleared. Something being finished rather than something grinding on. If paying it feels like closing a door, that is a good bill.

Can I just deposit it?

You can, but a bank deposit is not circulation, it is storage. The point is moving it out into the world.

Do I have to replace it with the same amount?

Ideally. Same amount, new note, practice continues uninterrupted.

What if I cannot replace it right away?

Then wait and swap when you can. Do not spend the old one until the new one is in place, otherwise you have just spent your kept money.

Does this apply to the #28 note?

Yes, and write the code fresh on the new one. More on that in the wealth code.

Pair it with 🔗

This is the hinge between the two halves of the practice: holding money still and letting it move. Most people only ever learn one.
