✨ Your Big Three in Astrology: Sun, Moon and Rising Explained

Let us clear something up, my loves

When someone asks what your sign is, they are asking about one placement out of thousands in your chart. That single answer has been carrying the weight of an entire birth chart for decades, and it is exhausted.

Your big three are your sun, your moon and your rising. Together they describe your purpose, your inner life and your doorway into the world. Learn all three and astrology stops feeling like a personality quiz and starts feeling like a mirror.

Ask yourself: which version of me do people meet first, and is she the same one who lies awake at night?

Your Sun: who you are becoming ☀️

Your sun sign is the placement everyone knows. It is determined by the date of your birth, and it moves slowly, spending roughly a month in each sign. That is why anyone born within your birthday window shares it.

In my teachings, the sun is not a description of who you already are. It is the assignment. It is the direction your soul is growing toward across a lifetime. A Capricorn sun is not born disciplined; a Capricorn sun is here to learn what real authority costs and what it is worth.

This is why so many people read their sun sign and feel only half seen. You are reading the destination while standing at the beginning of the road.

Your Moon: who you are when no one is watching 🌙

Your moon sign is set by where the moon was at your birth. The moon changes signs roughly every two and a half days, so it is more personal than your sun and far less discussed.

The moon governs your emotional body. It is how you self-soothe, what you need in order to feel safe, what you do with grief, and the reaction that arrives before your rational mind catches up. It is also the placement most shaped by your childhood home.

If your sun and moon are in very different signs, you already know it. You have felt the friction between what you are reaching for and what actually comforts you. That friction is not a flaw in your chart. It is the work.

Your Rising: the door people walk through 🚪

Your rising sign, also called your ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the exact moment you took your first breath. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why you need your birth time to know it, and why two people born the same day can move through the world completely differently.

Most teachers will tell you the rising sign is a mask. I do not teach it that way. A mask is something false you put on. Your rising is the doorway your spirit chose to arrive through, and everything anyone learns about you, they learn by walking through it first.

Your rising also sets the entire structure of your chart, deciding which area of life each sign governs for you. This is why I always tell you to read for your rising sign first. It is the frame around everything else.

I am not one sign. I am a whole sky.

How to read all three together 🪽

Stop reading your placements as three separate horoscopes. Read them as one sentence.

Try it in this shape: I meet the world as my rising, I feel privately as my moon, and I am growing toward my sun. A Scorpio rising with a Pisces moon and a Sagittarius sun meets you guarded, feels everything in private, and is here to learn to tell the truth out loud.

When those three pull in different directions, that is not a contradiction to fix. That is the particular tension your soul signed up for, and it is usually where your gift lives.

You will need your birth time 📚

Your sun needs only your birth date. Your moon usually needs the date and a rough time. Your rising needs the time, and it needs it accurately, because a two hour margin can move it a whole sign.

Once you have your birth details, you do not need to calculate anything yourself. My free big three astrology calculator will give you all three placements at once.

Your birth certificate is the reliable source. Not your memory, not what you were told. If you truly cannot find it, an astrologer can work backward from the events of your life to estimate it, though that is a longer conversation.

Once you have all three, come back and read the rising sign piece for your own doorway. That is where this gets personal.

Work with your rising sign daily 📓

Once you know your rising sign, the Rising Sign Journal gives you a page for every day from August 12, 2026 through December 31, 2027, written for that placement. A prompt, the day’s number, the moon phase, a tarot teacher, and three timed check-ins at 9 AM, 3 PM and 9 PM. There are twelve editions, one for each rising sign.
